Weapon: The Navigator (Trace Rifle · Special · Strand) · Subclass: Strand (Threadrunner) · Role: Team Woven-Mail battery + self-sustaining add-clear Sandbox: 9.7.0 · Created 2026-06-16
A support gun that pays you to keep your team alive. Spray an ally and both of you get Woven Mail (≈45% DR), and The Navigator deals more damage because you're wearing it — so the selfless act is also the selfish one. Build the whole kit around never letting Woven Mail drop: Grapple grants it, suspending grants it, orbs grant it, and the gun grants it to everyone in the fireteam. Then make Tangles for free and spit Threadlings out of the corpses. Low-effort, high-uptime, never-not-buffed.
The weapon
Protective Weave (exotic perk, verbatim):"Firing this weapon at an ally grants Woven Mail to both the user and the target. Deals more damage while you have Woven Mail."
Gordian Knot (catalyst, verbatim):"Special reload and then fire to create a Grapple Tangle at the targeted point."
What it does: The Navigator is a Strand Special-ammo Trace Rifle. Hosing an ally (or yourself's reticle drifting onto one) drapes Woven Mail over both of you, and the gun gets a personal damage buff the entire time you have Woven Mail — which, in this build, is always. The catalyst turns it into a Tangle factory: special-reload, fire, and a Grapple Tangle drops where you aim — free fuel for every Tangle-consuming aspect/fragment on the kit and a free reposition for you.

Why
Subclass
Strand (Threadrunner)
Native Woven Mail + Tangle + Threadling economy — every Navigator interaction is Strand.
Super
Silkstrike
Roaming Strand whip; on-theme, clears the rooms The Navigator buffs the team to push into.
Class ability
Marksman's Dodge
Instant reload of The Navigator between buff-sprays; no animation dead time.
Melee
Threaded Spike
Bouncing boomerang melee — bounces between targets, returns melee energy, generates Tangles to feed the loop.
Grenade
Grapple
The keystone: Grapple → Woven Mail (Cyrtarachne) → Grapple Tangle (Widow's Silk) → mobility + Tangle fuel.
Aspect 1
Widow's Silk
Extra grenade charge and Grapple creates a Grapple Tangle — doubles your Grapple uptime and makes the Tangle economy free.
Aspect 2
Whirling Maelstrom
Destroying a Tangle weaves a Strand mass that shreds the pack and emits Unraveling projectiles — turns your Tangle surplus into autonomous add-clear.
Fragments (4)
Thread of Wardingpick up an Orb of Power → Woven Mail — a third independent Woven Mail source
Thread of Transmutationwhile you have Woven Mail, weapon final blows create a Tangle — feeds Maelstrom off normal kills
Thread of Generationdamaging targets generates grenade energy → faster Grapple
Thread of FuryTangle damage → melee energy → more Threaded Spike → more Tangles). Net stat deltas: +10 Melee (Transmutation
−10 HealthWarding
Exotic armour — Cyrtarachne's Facade (Helmet)
Acrobat's Focus (verbatim):"Activating Grapple grants Woven Mail. While active, Woven Mail provides flinch resistance and health when defeating targets."
This is the iconic Strand-Hunter Woven-Mail piece and it makes the build:
Grapple → Woven Mail on demand, so your DR is never gated behind hitting an ally with The Navigator — solo or in a fireteam, you self-buff.
Cyrtarachne upgrades the Woven Mail itself: while it's up you get flinch resistance (a Trace Rifle wants a steady beam — flinch immunity is huge) and health on kills (the gun's job becomes self-healing).
So the helmet and the gun are two ends of one loop: Grapple gives you Mail → The Navigator deals bonus damage and sprays Mail onto the team → kills under Mail heal you and don't flinch you → Grapple comes back (Thread of Generation) → repeat.
Why this works (the mechanics)
Three+ independent Woven Mail sources = permanent uptime. Grapple (Cyrtarachne), an ally-spray (Protective Weave), and Orb pickup (Thread of Warding) all grant it. The Navigator's damage buff keys off having Woven Mail, so stacking sources means the gun's bonus damage is effectively always on.
The catalyst closes the Tangle economy with the gun itself. Gordian Knot makes Grapple Tangles on a special-reload-then-fire — so even when Grapple the grenade is down, The Navigator still produces the Tangles that Whirling Maelstrom and Thread of Transmutation consume.
Tangle surplus becomes free add-clear. Widow's Silk (Grapple → Tangle) + Gordian Knot (gun → Tangle) + Thread of Transmutation (Mail kills → Tangle) means you destroy Tangles constantly → Whirling Maelstrom spawns Strand masses that kill on their own and Unravel the survivors. The room clears while you keep beaming buffs onto teammates.
The fireteam-support angle is the real exotic. Protective Weave is one of the only ways to hand another player ~45% DR repeatedly. In a fireteam this gun is a mobile shield generator; the bonus-damage clause means you're not sacrificing your own DPS to play medic.
Special ammo, not the damage centrepiece. The Navigator is a utility Special — your Heavy and Primary do the heavy lifting; The Navigator is the buff-applicator and Tangle printer you swap to constantly. Marksman's Dodge reloads it free so the swap costs nothing.
Stats & mods
Class 100+ → Weapons → Grenade → Health (dump). Class feeds Marksman's Dodge (free Navigator reloads) and dodge cooldown; Grenade speeds Grapple; Weapons adds PvE damage on top of Protective Weave's clause; Health is the dump stat because Woven Mail + Cyrtarachne healing already cover survivability.
Mods, by piece:
Helmet: Harmonic Siphon (Strand kills → Orbs, which arm Thread of Warding) · Heavy Ammo Finder.
Gauntlets: Grenade Font · Momentum Transfer (grenade damage → melee energy → Threaded Spike).
Chest: Resistance mods ×3 (flat DR under the Mail).
Boots:Strand Weapon Surge ×2 (≈+17% onto The Navigator) · Orbs of Restoration.
Class item: Powerful Attraction (dodge vacuums Orbs → Thread of Warding Mail) · Bomber/Distribution.
Where it shines
Fireteam content (raids, GMs, dungeons): the standout use case — you hand the whole fireteam repeated Woven Mail while still contributing damage. A near-unique support role.
Add-dense survival content: Whirling Maelstrom + Tangle surplus auto-clears while you stay buffed and self-healing via Cyrtarachne.
Champions:The Navigator carries no intrinsic stun and Trace Rifles have no archetype anti-Champion role — this build does not handle champions with the exotic. Cover Barrier/Unstoppable/Overload with your Primary's archetype intrinsic and/or artifact anti-Champion mods; Strand Suspend (Threaded Spike Tangles, Silkstrike) hard-controls Unstoppable/Overload behaviour as a stopgap, but bring real stun on another slot.
### The other two weapon slots
Primary (kinetic/Stasis): your champion-stun archetype and your main ammo-economy gun — a Strand Primary (e.g. an Unraveling/Threadling roll) keeps the subclass synergy but any primary works; pick it for champion coverage.
Heavy — Euphony (Strand Linear Fusion, exotic):"Dealing sustained damage spawns Threadlings at your target's location." Stays on-element, doubles down on the Threadling/Strand theme, and is your boss/major DPS while The Navigator plays support. (Any Heavy works; Euphony is the on-theme pick.)
